From Moscow to Rome, from Pecs to Seoul, and from Vilnius to Brussels, a new rite appears to be spreading around the world: the love locks. Lovers write or engrave their names on it, then hang it on a railing and throw the key into the river, as a symbolic gesture for an everlasting love. The origin of this practice is mysterious, and it is not a Parisian specialty.
In Paris, it is the railings of the Pont des Arts which are adorned with a hundred of these locks of all shapes, materials and colors. Lovers write dates, names, or draw all kinds of symbols like hearts or red lips.
This pedestrian bridge, as popular as it is elegant, is dedicated to strolling. In the heart of historic Paris, between the Louvre and the Institut de France, the Pont des Arts offers a delightful view, along the Seine, on the Quai de Conti, Quai Malaquais, Quai du Louvre and Mitterrand. Jean-Paul Sartre has there been photographed by Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Brassens set the bridge to music, and this bridge, closely linked to the artistic life of Paris, hosts regular exhibitions.
The circuit of Les Cars Rouges takes you to the Pont des Arts: get off the bus at the Louvre and you're there! Discover this romantic bridge and hang your own love lock, enjoy the atmosphere and the view, listen to the musicians practising, or discover the exhibitions that can be held there.
