Ancient plain of Grenelle, it is situated between the northerly facade of the Military academy and the Seine.

Formerly allocated to the operations and to the military reviews, this place welcomed the World or international Fairs of 1867, 1878, 1889 (construction of the Eiffel Tower), on 1900 and 1937.
